What Is A Concrete Washout?

See this content in the original post

Concrete waste management is an important consideration under any construction site environmental management plan. In the construction industry, safe and environmentally sound work methods are extremely important. Concrete washout occurs after concrete is poured on site. To prevent concrete blowback, the chutes of the concrete pumps must be washed out to remove the remaining concrete and waste water before it hardens. The stockpiling and disposal of waste concrete and slurry poses risks of environmental harm if not managed.

Environmental Risks

Concrete washout water (slurry), especially from cement, contains high concentrations of metals rendering it corrosive and highly alkaline. This poses risks to any potential receptors including local waterways (rivers, lakes, estuaries) and vegetation. Another potential risk is concrete wash water mixing with rainwater. This can then seep into soil, changing its chemistry, destroying vegetation and also contaminating groundwater. There are also risks to workers on site and the public. Any direct contact with the concrete washout commonly results in skin irritation and eye damage.

Concrete Washout Solutions

To ensure your concrete washout does not end in environmental disaster it is crucial to have a washout system in place. By using one of our concrete washout skips or concrete blowout bins for hire, any risk of leakage is eliminated. Our blowout bins are specifically designed for easy connection of the pump to the bin. They can also have fork pockets and lifting lugs installed to allow easy movement around your job site.
